Washed Out is the project of Ernest Greene, an American musician from Perry, Georgia who became one of the founding figures of chillwave after his 2009 breakout track "Feel It All Around" set the template for the genre, leading Pitchfork to dub him the "Godfather of Chillwave." Greene started out with no real music career ambitions, earning an undergraduate degree from the University of Georgia and a master's in library science, but unable to find work as a librarian, he moved back in with his parents and began producing songs in a bedroom studio. That lo-fi, hazy aesthetic, hushed vocals layered over warm synths and tape-saturated textures, became his signature sound, and his song "Feel It All Around" later became the opening theme for the TV series Portlandia.
